July 18th, 1998; Mt. Ord Run

On July 18th Dr. Deek (Dick Williamson) led a trail ride to a lookout area just below the summit of Mt. Ord. The trail started at the North Western side of the mountail in AZ87 and wound up through the trees. Then it met with the main road up the mountain. A little further (actually heading down the main trail), we took a side trail (to our left past a corral) and headed up again to the open camping area at the trail's end, at least for motor vehicles. This would also be a nice ATV run, too. At the clearing we had a campfire and roasted burgers, dogs and a small eagle (only kidding for you Eco-freaks, it was actually chicken). We brought the telescope and could see the Mesa and Phoenix area and a small wildfire between us and Bartlett Lake. Later some of us went to the top to visit the rangers and see more stars but the upper road was closed at 6:00pm, not to good if you're a star watcher. Oh well, we all had a great time and got out of the heat for a few hours. Here are some photos. Oh yes, that was a "snake in the night" in one of the last photos and on the way down we were treated to some wide spread darkness.
